About me…
Kara Blackburn MSN-Forensic Nursing, RN, CCRN, LNC
My journey to founding Blackburn Medicolegal Consulting, LLC has been shaped by nearly three decades of nursing experience, a commitment to patient advocacy, and a passion for improving healthcare through evidence-based analysis.
For more than 28 years, I have cared for patients across a broad range of healthcare settings, including critical care, dialysis, oncology, correctional healthcare, and forensic nursing. Throughout my career, I have witnessed firsthand how clinical decisions, documentation, communication, and healthcare systems can profoundly influence patient outcomes. These experiences strengthened my commitment not only to providing exceptional patient care but also to promoting accountability, quality, and justice within healthcare.
As my career progressed, I recognized that my clinical expertise could serve an even greater purpose by helping bridge the gap between medicine and the legal system. This realization led me to pursue advanced education, earning a Master of Science in Nursing with a specialization in Forensic Nursing, followed by certification as a Legal Nurse Consultant. My graduate education, medicolegal training, and experience in forensic practice provided me with the knowledge and skills to analyze complex medical issues through both clinical and legal perspectives.
During my forensic nursing education, I participated in medicolegal death investigations with the Richmond County Coroner's Office, gaining valuable experience in evidence preservation, forensic documentation, autopsy review, toxicology interpretation, and multidisciplinary case analysis. I also completed graduate research focused on healthcare policy and patient advocacy, developing a legislative proposal to modernize the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) by expanding emergency access protections for vulnerable populations. This work reinforced my belief that healthcare professionals have an important role in advancing both individual justice and systemic improvement.
These experiences ultimately inspired the creation of Blackburn Medicolegal Consulting, LLC. My practice was founded on the belief that accurate medical analysis, objective evaluation, and clear communication are essential to achieving fair legal outcomes. I work alongside attorneys, healthcare organizations, insurance professionals, and other legal teams to interpret complex medical records, identify applicable standards of care, develop detailed medical chronologies, evaluate case merit, and provide comprehensive medicolegal consultation.
At Blackburn Medicolegal Consulting, every case is approached with integrity, professionalism, and meticulous attention to detail. My goal is to transform complex medical information into organized, understandable, and evidence-based analyses that assist legal professionals in making informed decisions while supporting the pursuit of justice.
I believe that every medical record tells a story. My role is to ensure that story is accurately understood, objectively analyzed, and effectively communicated.
